How to Dye Sprinkles

Are Sprinkles Gluten Free?
Yes and no. The important part is, you need to check your labels. You can buy white sprinkles at more places sprinkles are available but they’re not all gluten free. My top choices for white gluten free sprinkles are from Sweetapolita (based in Canada) and Judee’s White Sprinkles, available on Amazon.

Ingredients Needed to Dye Sprinkles
- Gel Food Coloring – I have and recommend the Americolor Nifty Fifty Soft Gel Paste (50 colors) but the Student Kit is a great starting point with 12 colors.
- White Sprinkles – Judee’s White Sprinkles are gluten free and nut free.
Equipment Needed to Dye Your Own Sprinkles
- Plastic Zip-loc Bag
- Parchment Paper or Wax Paper
- Rimmed Sheet Pan (1/4 or 1/2 sheet)
How to Dye Sprinkles
Step 1. Add the gel food coloring and sprinkles to the plastic bag and very gently massage the bag. You’ll see the color begin to coat the sprinkles– keep massaging until the sprinkles are evenly coated (about 30 seconds).
Step 2. Dump the sprinkles out onto a parchment-lined sheet pan and allow them to dry for 1 hour before using.
Step 3. Store the sprinkles in an airtight container for up to 6 months at room temperature.
Tips for Coloring Sprinkles
- Use GEL food coloring, I don’t recommend using liquid food coloring.
- You can scale this recipe up as much as you need!
- This trick should work with any color you want! If you want to make a color you don’t have, just combine colors like you would do for frosting– for example, to make green sprinkles combine 1 drop blue food coloring and 1 drop yellow food coloring. Massage the bag before adding the sprinkles until the color is green and then add ½ cup sprinkles and continue as directed.
- This trick works on pretty much any white sprinkle– nonpareils, jimmies, specialty mixes!
- Adding too much food coloring can result in the sprinkles clumping together. If they look like they’re sticking together in the bag, add a little more white sprinkles and continue to massage until they no longer stick together.
